Coach, Mentor, and Train MSW Students

Spalding University is seeking qualified MSW practitioners to become Agency Practicum Instructors and coach, mentor, and train our online MSW students through practicum opportunities. Our Master of Social Work (MSW) program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and is centered on the principle that responsible social workers are agents of healing, transformation, and social change.

Agency Practicum Instructors requirements:

  • A Master of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program.
  • A minimum two years post-graduate, full-time social work experience.
  • Licensure is NOT required.
  • Provide a minimum one hour per week MSW supervision.
  • Assist students in developing their learning plan.
  • Conduct midterm and final evaluations with the student and Practicum Faculty.
  • Meet 2-3 times per semester with Practicum Faculty regarding student practicum evaluation.

Agency Practicum Instructors have the opportunity to coach, mentor, and train MSW students through 450 Practicum education hours across two semesters – averaging 16 practicum hours per week.

Spalding University social work students in our foundation MSW program are engaged in a learning community model that prepares them to be competent generalist social work practitioners. Our MSW graduates are equipped to use an integrative approach and global perspective in multi-faceted roles and contexts to promote sustainable social justice, peace, well-being, and human rights within and across the micro to macro spectrum.

SW 620
Practicum I

The Foundation Year field practicum is an educationally directed, on-site generalist experience under the instruction of an agency-based social work instructor and a campus-based faculty member. In this first half of the practicum experience, students complete approximately half (225) of the hours required (450) for completion of the Foundation Year Practicum over two semesters. The practicum assists students in the integration and application of practice theory to the practicum learning activities. The foundation practicum is taken concurrently with SW 621.

Field Seminar I

This course allows the learner to integrate social work theory with practice. The seminar provides a forum for the learners to evaluate their own practice performance through considering issues of personal and professional ethics and values, practicing realities with diverse populations, and developing new theories and skills. Particular emphasis is placed on learners understanding their role as agency-based practitioners. An important element of the seminar is exploring processes of critical thinking and reflective practice. Assignments include both structured learning activities and active participation in the seminar discussions, including giving and receiving feedback. SW 621 is taken concurrently with SW 620.

SW 622
Practicum II

The foundation field practicum is an educationally directed, on-site generalist experience under the instruction of an agency-based social work instructor and a campus-based faculty member. Students engage in the remaining hours (approximately 225 hours) required by the MSW Foundation Year curriculum (450). The practicum assists students in the integration and application of practice theory to the practicum learning activities. The foundation practicum is taken concurrently with SW 623.

Field Seminar II

This course allows the learner to integrate social work theory with practice. Practicum III

The concentration year practicum is an educationally directed on-site experience in integrative social work practice under the instruction of an agency-based social work instructor and a campus-based faculty member. Learners complete approximately half of the hours (225) required for completion of the practicum experience (total of 450 hours) in SW 624 and complete the remaining 225 hours in SW 626. SW 624 is taken concurrently with SW 625 to assist learners in applying integrative practice theory to the practicum learning activities.

In these seminars, learners work with theoretical constructs and information gained in the classroom and apply the integrative practice model to practicum learning activities. The seminars provide additional integration of coursework and daily practice, enhance learners’ knowledge and skill base through peer sharing, and provide a supportive opportunity for learners to debrief on practice challenges. SW 625 and SW 627 are taken concurrently with SW 620 and SW 622.

Practicum IV

In these seminars, learners work with theoretical constructs and information gained in the classroom and apply the integrative practice model to practicum learning activities. The seminars provide additional integration of coursework and daily practice, enhance learners’ knowledge and skill base through peer sharing, and provide a supportive opportunity for learners to debrief on practice challenges. SW 625 and SW 627 are taken concurrently with SW 620 and SW 622.

In these seminars, learners work with theoretical constructs and information gained in the classroom and apply the integrative practice model to practicum learning activities. The seminars provide additional integration of course work and daily practice, enhance learners’ knowledge and skill base through peer sharing, and provide a supportive opportunity for learners to debrief on practice challenges. SW 627 is taken concurrently with SW 626.
