What Is It Like to Study Online with Spalding? 

The online EdD curriculum is thoroughly engaging and designed for you to connect with other students and faculty. On average, you can expect to devote 25-30 hours a week to: 

  • Reading
  • Discussion boards
  • Research and writing
  • Weekly synchronous sessions

You will participate in online discussions, quizzes and group projects in a dynamic online learning space called Canvas. Spalding University provides free accounts for Microsoft 365 where you can check email, create virtual presentations and save documents. Zoom is also used for video meetings and collaboration with peers. 

At Spalding, we know that success looks different for every student. We will connect with you individually to help you be successful in and out of the virtual classroom. In addition to your faculty, you will be paired with a student success advisor who will be your primary contact and mentor until it’s time for graduation. What is Canvas?

Canvas is a Learning Management System that organizes all of your coursework. Faculty will post grades, assignments, quizzes, tests and other activities directly in Canvas. This can be accessed online.

Where can I see what Canvas looks like?

Can I access emails and courses on my phone?

Yes! Microsoft 365 and Canvas learning management system have applications that can be downloaded on your smartphone.

What technology do I need for classes?

In general, a reliable internet connection as well as a laptop or desktop computer running Windows 10 or macOS Sierra or newer will be sufficient. You may also want to invest in speakers, a headset and a microphone.

What programs should I familiarize myself with?

It may be helpful to gain proficient knowledge in Microsoft Office which includes: 

  • Word – to create documents   
  • PowerPoint – to create virtual presentations 
  • Excel – to organize data in spreadsheets 
  • OneNote – to save, access, edit, and share files  

Programs like Grammarly and Google Scholar are helpful for research.

You are not alone! Online learning is different from a traditional classroom, but at Spalding you are supported every step of the way.
